Biographical Text
Docia Hrehoriak, nee Eudokija Wakaluk, was born in the town of Elintsi in the region of Snatyn, Bukovina, in Ukraine. She entered Canada through the port of Halifax in 1924, then came to Vancouver where she stayed with her brother Joseph Wakaluk. She married Constantin Hrehoriak in 1929 and after a name change was known as Docia Horick. She worked as a housekeeper, then from 1933 onward she farmed in Langley.
Docia was an active participant in the Ukrainian community from the time of her arrival in Vancouver in 1924. When the Ukrainian Labour Farmer Temple Association opened in 1928 she took some English language classes, sang in the choir, acted, and played "Prestawlina" in the Hall's plays. The Hall was a centre where she could could find companionship and enjoy her cultural heritage.
