Biographical Text

Stevie Bobb (nee Semkovich) was born in 1919. She came to Vancouver in 1934, where she visited the Ukrainian Labour Temple and became interested in the many activities taking place there, especially the concerts and plays. Stevie soon joined the Hall's choir, drama group, and dance group. Stevie had an extraordinary voice and soon became a noted soloist for the AUUC. Her role in "Waiting for Lefty" (which toured Canada) and her many leads in Ukrainian operettas together with her solo appearances made her known outside the AUUC in Vancouver. In 1938 Stevie married John Bobb and together they had two children.

During the war, when the Hall was closed, Stevie continued working with a group of AUUC dancers and appeared regularly at bond rallies and army bases. In 1945 Stevie headed to the dancing collective of the 1st Provincial Festival in BC and in 1946 was instructor of the dancers who toured BC and Alberta on their way to the AUUC Festival held in Edmonton. Stevie took part in many other activities with the AUUC and the WBA.

In her later years Stevie became an avid fisherman and she and her family spent many holidays fishing and enjoying the great BC outdoors. In 1969 Stevie found out that she had a terminal illness. She continued to lead a normal life, taking part in the orchestra and other activities within the AUUC. On March 4th, 1971 Stevie lost her battle with cancer and the AUUC lost a very special member.
