Biographical Text
Pauline Bartko was born in the town of Kalionsky, in the Horodenka District of Ukraine. She came to Canada in 1904 where her family homesteaded in the Komarno district in Manitoba. Pauline worked in the Workers' and Farmers' Co-operative Creamery in Winnipeg in the 1930's. She joined the Ukrainian Labour Farmer Temple Association in 1923.
Pauline loved to partake in Ukrainian plays. She learned to become a good speaker and was often asked to speak at meetings of the poor farmers in Northern Manitoba during the Depression years. She spoke at many funerals and on behalf of the Workers Benevolent Association. She was active in the union movement and was a representative to the Trades and Labour Council. She also held important posts on the Executive Board of the Women's Branch of the ULFTA.
