Biographical Text

Joseph Wakaluk immigrated to Vancouver, Canada between 1910-1912 from Ilinstsi, Austria. Soon after his arrival he sent for Maria Ponar, whom he married. In 1914 they had a son, Wasyl Wakaluk, who after WWII changed his name to William Wallace.

After WWI, Joseph and Maria sponsored many of their family members who joined them in Vancouver. Around 1922 Tikania Ponar arrived in Vancouver, and in 1924 was followed by John and Eudoxia Wakaluk as well as Nastia (Nellie) Ponar and several others. These people all became involved with the Ukrainian community in Vancouver, establishing what has become the AUUC. They were actively involved in the building of the Hall at 805 East Pender that opened in 1928. They were all part of the social aspects of the Hall, as well as the school functions were they learned English. They participated in concerts, plays, orchestra, and other cultural activities offered at the Hall.

Joseph and Maria were active until their deaths. Stefan and Nellie Fedorak were also very active until Stefan died in 1974 and Nellie in 1976.
