Biographical Text
Katerina (Kay) Tuchak, nee Sopel, was born in Sopolion, Poland. She arrived in Canada via the port of Halifax in 1935 and settled in Ituna, Saskatchewan where her family farmed. In 1943 she came to live with her uncle in Steveston, BC, where she met and married Roy Tuchak in 1944. Together they owned a small berry farm, and Kay also worked in Steveston's fish cannery and in a nursing home.
Kay joined the Richmond Branch of the AUUC after the Second World War. She wanted to educate herself as a person as well as take part in the organization that her husband was so involved in. She also wanted her two children Marion and Gladys to become involved in Ukrainian culture through dancing, music, and language school. Kay enjoyed singing in the choir. She also cooked and fulfilled other kitchen duties for the many events held at the Hall.
